“Hug Your Son, Raise a Man” calls fathers worldwide to close the emotional gap with their sons — one hug at a time
Lagos, Nigeria — March 18, 2026-The Boys Mentoring Advocacy Network (BMAN), an international non-governmental organisation dedicated to the development and wellbeing of boys and young men, today announced the release of Hug Your Son, Raise a Man: A Practical Guide to Strengthening Father–Son Bonds Through the Power of Hugs — a science-backed, culturally grounded resource designed to help fathers build deeper, more intentional relationships with their sons.
Written by Ola Akinwe, founder of BMAN and initiator of the Global Hugs for Boys Campaign, the guide arrives at a critical moment — as growing research continues to link father absence and emotional disconnection to rising rates of anxiety, aggression, and mental health challenges among boys worldwide.
A Simple Act. A Lasting Impact.
At the heart of the guide is a powerful and often overlooked truth: a father’s hug is not a small thing. Backed by neuroscience, the guide explains how physical affection between fathers and sons triggers the release of oxytocin — the bonding hormone — reducing stress, lowering cortisol levels, and literally rewiring a boy’s brain for greater emotional resilience and security.
“We are raising a generation of boys who are starving for emotional connection with their fathers,” said Ola Akinwe. “This guide is not about grand gestures. It is about the daily, intentional act of holding your son close and saying, without words, that he is safe, valued, and loved. That one act — repeated consistently — can change the course of a boy’s life.”
What the Guide Covers
Spanning eight chapters and a bonus 7-Day Father–Son Hug Challenge, Hug Your Son, Raise a Man offers fathers a complete, practical roadmap for building emotional bonds at every stage of a son’s development — from infancy through to young adulthood. The guide addresses:
- The neuroscience of physical affection and its effect on boys’ emotional development
- Stage-by-stage guidance from birth to adulthood, including how to connect with a resistant teenager
- A six-step action plan to make hugging a natural, consistent part of daily family life
- Cultural perspectives from Maori, Brazilian, Nigerian, and Japanese fatherhood traditions
- Practical strategies for overcoming cultural stigma, personal discomfort, and a son who pushes back
- The Father–Son Hug Pledge — a personal commitment fathers make to their sons
- A 7-Day Challenge with one intentional hug per day, each with a specific purpose and a phrase that stays with him
A Movement, Not Just a Book
The release of the guide is part of BMAN’s broader Global Hugs for Boys Campaign — a worldwide movement challenging outdated norms of masculinity and encouraging fathers, mentors, and communities to reconnect with boys through everyday acts of affection, presence, and emotional affirmation.
Rather than placing the guide behind a traditional paywall, BMAN has adopted a Donate-for-Access model, ensuring that fathers everywhere — regardless of economic circumstances — can benefit from the resource while also contributing to the campaign’s expansion.
“We believe every father deserves access to this guide,” Akinwe added. “And every donation helps us reach more fathers, train more mentors, and expand the movement to more communities around the world.”
