There are an estimated 1.4 million blind children worldwide. Approximately three quarters of these live in the poorest regions of Africa and Asia. The burden of disability in terms of blind years in these children represents a major social, emotional, and economic burden for the children, their families, the communities, and the nation. This is an initiative taken to accelerate the efforts to elevate, integrate and activate child eye health to meet the growing eye care needs among our children.

Challenge
Children with vision impairment have poorer educational outcomes and are more likely to be excluded from schools. Severe vision loss or blindness can mean that some parts of a child’s development and learning will be slower than other children. It affects physical health by increasing risk of falls and quality of life. The societal stigma, the lack of emotional support, limited accessibility to activities and information are factors leading kids with low vision to loneliness and social isolation.

Solution
Eye screening, diagnosis for visual impairments, referrals for surgery and bill payments, free distributions of Eye glasses, Eye treatments and medications. Journal of Ophthalmology & Clinical Research reveals that “Most causes of childhood blindness found in children at National Eye Centre, Kaduna, Nigeria are preventable. A comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach comprising of eye examination at birth, children eye screening and early vaccination for infectious diseases, is warranted.”
