LITERACY
PROJECT
FOR AT-RISK
CHILDREN IN
AFRICA
Literacy is the fundamental driver of all the changes education brings to mankind. Studies show that just learning to read and write (LITERACY) could lift 171 million people out of poverty. BMAN is expanding this Literacy Project to urban and rural communities to equip at-risk children to be proficient in literacy skills.
Challenge
A disheartening large number of people in Nigeria cannot read and write as well as they should and need for their own success and the public good. Approximately over 70% of school age children are affected from all social classes. Nigeria has about 20 million out-of -school children according to UNICEF report in October 2022. This problem is caused because a very large number of Nigerian children live below the poverty line coupled with the fact that English is not their native language.
Solution
Hosting a12-hour weekly literacy class for 72 weeks (18 months) covering; Writing Skills Development, Reading Recovery Programs, Speaking Skills Development, Comprehension Skills and Strategies Development, Listening Skills Development.
Long-Term Impact
Children need not to just know how to read but do so at a level considered well enough to meet the demands of an increasingly complex world. The need to be able to self-monitor their own reading, apply comprehension skills and strategies to text for independent problem solving and critical thinking is now more than ever so that they are able to contribute to a thriving society.
